Taxi-driver Wisdom

When I was traveling in Denmark for work I got involved in an interesting discussion with one of my taxi drivers.

Normally I am not necessarily talkative when driving from hotel to training location, so it was quite special that this discussion happened. Especially because of the turn it took.

We started talking about the regular things like “Where are you from?” and “Do you travel a lot?” before entering a deeper level of conversation. As this was not at all a conscious attempt the flow of the conversation took us there.

While we were exchanging stories and facts of our lives I started wondering why this eloquent person had chosen to become a taxi driver – so I asked him.

His answer was both evasive as well as philosophical:

“There are two things in life that you cannot influence – first is where you are born and second is where you end up.”

It took me a while to digest this – and we reached my destination. I paid, we said goodbye and went our own way. Next morning I had to travel again and was looking to see this same taxi driver. But he was not there –

Beautiful how seemingly casual interactions can enrich your life unexpectedly when you are open to share.
